It is with great sadness that the family of Verna Keating announces her passing. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 16th, 2013. Verna grew up in the Swift Current area and then moved to Medicine Hat to pursue her nursing career. It is here that she met the love of her life, Chuck, and together they raised their four children. Verna was active in the community becoming involved in Kinettes, UCW and the United Church. She was a dedicated nurse throughout her forty-five year career, but her passion was always her family. Verna is survived by her children: Rick (Annette) Keating of Cochrane and their children, Mark (April) Keating and Sarah Keating (Jeff Parkin); Janet (Darrell) MacGregor of Medicine Hat and their children Cameron MacGregor and Brent MacGregor; Dianne (Mike) Hanson of Medicine Hat and their daughter, Alex Hanson; her son-in-law, Bill (Frances Hargrave) Christie of Brooks and his children, Ryan (Anita) Christie and their sons, Logan and Ty; and Darren (Wendy) Christie and their daughters, Hannah, Charlie, and Taya; one brother, Don (Irene) Brandhagen; brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Joyce) Keating; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Verna was predeceased by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Keating; her daughter, Joan Christie; and her brother and sister-in-law, Allan (Margaret) Brandhagen. Mom, or Nan, as she was fondly referred to, was a caregiver by nature and her compassion was felt by anyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Mom left an impact on many lives and was often referred to as an angel on earth. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held in FIFTH AVENUE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH on Thursday, January 24th, 2013 with Reverend Kevin Johnston officiating. A Private Interment will follow in the Family Plot at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Verna’s memory may be made to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, or to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre both c/o 666 - 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6.
