It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Friedrich Sustrate of Medicine Hat who passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the age of 86 years, beloved husband of the late Ursula Sustrate who passed away just five weeks ago on January 18, 2013. He is survived by four sons, Frank (Tracey), Udo (Marilyn Krause), Klaus (Monica) and Ed (Maria); one daughter, Conny; seven grandchildren, Joe, Jenni, Tony, Adam, Devin and Colten; one great grandson, Clayton; his brother, Erich; sister, Hilde; sister-in-law, Marga; his cousin Elsa as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gertrud and Heinrich Sustrate, two brothers Otto and Dieter Sustrate. Friedrich was born on February 20, 1927 in Germany. He attended engineering courses while working at the family’s successful sawmill business. Friedrich and Ursula married on April 30, 1954 in Germany and shortly after moved to Canada to start their new life together; Friedrich arriving first with only $10 in his pocket and Ursula arrived a year later. Because of the different construction regulations in Canada, Friedrich was required to complete courses to receive his papers to work as a tradesman in the Canadian Construction industry. He worked seven days a week while Ursula looked after the children and the finances. Soon they were able to afford their own house which Friedrich built. Throughout the years, he worked on various residential and commercial jobs in Medicine Hat and area. Friedrich passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He will be deeply missed. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 1:25 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Julianna Wehrfritz-Hanson officiating.
