HELENA MARGARETHA SHEEN of Cardston, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Grant Sheen, passed away peacefully with her family at her side in Cardston on Monday, July 26, 2010 at the age of 97 years.
She is the loving mother of: twin boys: Norman (Alice) and Raymond (Chris); Stanley (Eileen); Gordon (deceased) (Linda), Kenneth (Barbara); and Carol (Fred) Johnson. Helena also leaves behind 24 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Lily Carlson, and a brother, Alfred Korsan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helena is predeceased by her husband Grant Moroni Sheen in 1988; her son, Gordon Sheen in 2005, two sisters, Margaret and Jean, one brother, Harold, and her parents Oscar and Martha Korsan.
Helena’s parents immigrated to Canada shortly after their marriage in Oslo, Norway, in 1911, and Helena was born in Outlook, Saskatchewan on November 16, 1912. She is the oldest in a family of three daughters and two sons. Helena’s father secured work with the Canadian Pacific Railway and moved to Jefferson, Alberta, when Helena was a young girl. She met Grant Sheen in Jefferson and they were married on November 13, 1934, in Cardston, Alberta. To that union were born five boys and one girl. She lived in various towns in southern Alberta for the remainder of her life, retiring to Cardston from their farm in Taylorville.
Mom loved to be surrounded by her family and had a wonderful memory for dates. She could remember every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild’s name and birthday right up to her 97th year. She had a keen and alert mind right up to the time of her death. She loved to sew and crochet and made numerous quilts and baby blankets for all her children and grandchildren. The year she was 90 years old, she made over 62 quilts for her family. She was also an avid reader and read the newspaper every day. She was a wonderful cook, and loved gardening, doing jigsaw puzzles, and growing beautiful flowers. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she diligently fulfilled her callings including a mission to the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. Most important to her was her family and her eternal companion, Grant. Helena’s delicious meals, especially her apple pies, her sense of humor and many creative talents will be greatly missed, but her legacy and love of life will always be celebrated by her family.
